White-Tailed Deer

Animal Name

Description

White-tailed Deer have coats that can change from grey to a reddish brown depending on if if colder, or hotter. This also helps them with camoflauge. Adult females are called does, adult males are called bucks, and the younger ones are called fawns. They weigh between 125 and 300 pounds, have good eyesight, can go up to 5-7 feet long, and 2-4 feet tall at the shoulder. They have good eyesight and have acute hearing, but rely on their sense of smell the most to avoid danger. Most White-tailed Deer are also shy, nervous, and easily startled.

Habitat

They live in fields and medows near forests they can use for shade, while in colder weather they find evergreen trees for shelter.

Conservation Status

their status is Least Concern1.

Why I Chose This Animal

I picked this animal because i've seen deer outside of (and in) the zoo and im interested in what their life must be like. A special trait it has that I like is how their antlers can grow back smaller and thinner if a buck reaches a certain age.
